Our interactive eLearning modules enhance traditional learning approaches and serve as a valuable outreach tool for new students interested in biotech.

Significant Figures

Significant figures are a way of showing the precision of a number or group of numbers. Significant figures are important because they tell us how good the data we are using are. Significant figures are critical when reporting scientific data because they give the reader an idea of how well you could actually measure/report your data.

In BioNetwork’s Counting Cells with a Hemocytometer you will learn how to:
Count cells using a Hemocytometer.
Recognize living cells vs dead cells.
Calculate the percentage of viable cells.
Find the average number of cells per square.
Calculate the dilution factor.
Find the concentration of

In science, it is not unusual for us to use either very large or very small numbers in our measurements and equations. Before the advent of calculators, we used scientific or exponential notation to simplify handling these very large or very small numbers.

Learn how to use an analytical balance. In this video, we'll explore the steps and techniques required to set up, take measurements, and clean the balance.

In this video, Jeff talks through some common issues and questions that beginners experience when learning to use a microscope. We'll discuss:
Common mistakes
Keeping both eyes open
Artifacts or specimens
Finding and centering the specimen
Oil immersion - how it works
Cleaning

Serological pipettes are used for measuring and transferring volumes of solution. Your technique must be exact to ensure accurate measurements and to avoid introducing contamination.
In this video, we'll demonstrate proper handling of pipettes, how to read the meniscus, and how to use both scales
