Basic Lab Skills

In this introductory course students will learn how to perform functions normally expected in a laboratory setting. Gain a basic knowledge of and learn how to operate and calibrate scientific equipment, become familiar with proper safety procedures, how to properly maintain order in the laboratory, basic scientific calculations essential for working in a laboratory environment and how to properly maintain a laboratory notebook. Students will also learn how to calculate and make chemical solutions, prepare growth media, perform sterile techniques, learn how to work in an aseptic environment and adjust pH. Brief reviews of biology and chemistry will be incorporated into this course to aid in learning more intermediate laboratory techniques. This course is recommended for students with no laboratory experience.
